I'm sure many of you have seen these photos, if not on my website then somewhere on the Internet, this trend for a smoke photoshoot has gained huge popularity—and for good reason! The pictures turn out absolutely epic.
But how do you achieve this result?
Where can you buy the smoke, and most importantly, is it safe?
Keep reading, because I'm about to answer all your questions.
So, buckle up and let's dive in!
Let's start with the fact that YES, it's completely safe, when you know how to use it.
There are two factors that the couples (well, let's be honest, usually the brides 😉) are concerned about:
getting the clothes dirty
holes in the clothes from the sparks when we light the smoke
I'm going to start with the second one. I always give a full explanation to my couples before we start the photoshoot, what are we going to do, what they can do, what they shouldn't do.
Keep the smoke flares at a safe distance from clothes, because once they are lit, they will not burn with spark/fire, only smoke, but my advice is to be better safe than sorry, and never keep it to close. This also helps with the first concern a little 😉
Getting the clothes dirty. As you can see in the pictures, we use not only white smoke, but also colorful. So naturally when the dust comes down, sometimes you can see a little hue of that color, but it's nothing permanent! If you're really worried about getting dirty there are a few solutions though:
use only white smoke - then even when the dust comes down, it's white (BUT be mindful that there will be some ash flying around, it's still smoke, burning, so you might end up with a few ash flakes in your hair 😉 But no worries, I always fix that for my brides and grooms never seem to have that problem (seems fair, I know, right?)
have your guests to hold the colorful smoke behind you, that's a great opportunity for a fun group photo and at the same time safe solution for you
put the smokes on the ground behind you and just walk away (or run away), you will have them as a beautiful background
How to get the best result during this photoshoot?
Listen to your photographer. They know what they are doing 😊 And you hired them for a reason, right? So just trust them.
To help them a bit you can observe the smoke, if it gets too thick in front of you, try to put the flare more up or behind you. You also need to be aware of the wind. But this is quite tricky to do at the same time and pose, and listen to the photographer, AND be overwhelmed with emotions of the most important day of your life, when your brain very often goes on vacation (trust me, I've been there 😁 after months of stress and planning you just let go). So really, don't sweat it and leave it to the professionals, it's their job after all (that's right, you've got people to tell you when to wave your hand now!).
Where can you buy them?
I buy mine in Poland, but whenever I have to buy locally, I can recommend these:
When you book a wedding package with me, the smoke is already included in the price and if you want to do the colorful ones, I'll try to match it with your theme 🫶
Share YOUR smoke photos on social media and make sure to use a tag #magicflashsmokephoto so I can find it and admire them too!
Have a Magical day!
Love,
Anna
